Yesterday, our second daughter, Maryam, won her school’s Spelling Bee competition and will now represent her school at the County Spelling Bee next year.
About 40 students, including our son, Adam, participated in the contest, which involved more than 20 rounds of spelling progressively difficult words. Adam came 6th.
I was a nervous wreck particularly when Maryam made it to the final round-- along with three other smart students. Adam confidently said, “Maryam will win this!”
In the final 17th round, Maryam correctly spelled her word and the second student standing got hers wrong. I thought that was the last round.
But the teacher said they would now go to the “Championship Round,” and the student who lost to her in the final round was a contestant! I almost got out of my chair to protest, but my wife restrained me.🤣 Maryam walloped the student in three more rounds yet again!
Maryam has always been a child brainiac. If I had half her precocity, I would have conquered the world. She wants to be a medical doctor, is a straight A student, and performs in the 99th percentile of all national standardized tests she takes. She makes us very proud.
All credit for her performance at the Spelling Bee goes to my wife, Maureen E Kperogi, who encouraged her and Adam to enter the contest and helped them study for it.
Abeg make una help me congratulate Maryam o!
