I started to hide my birthday on social media in the last few years because of my inability to keep up with the profusion of goodwill messages I often receive on the day.
In spite of the impression that my vigorous writing style creates of me, I’m a compulsively polite person and like to acknowledge every goodwill message I receive.
But it’s impossible to acknowledge thousands of messages. There are not enough hours in the day to do that. And I can't help feeling horrible when I'm not able to acknowledge messages.
That’s why I disabled birthday notifications on Facebook and only celebrate it with my family.
In spite of my best efforts to conceal the date, a young Facebook friend by the name of Ismail Bello El-Ibrany somehow remembered it yesterday and wrote a tribute in my honor. I didn’t think many people would see it.
He unintentionally opened the floodgates of birthday wishes, which increased exponentially when I changed my profile photo last night.
It’s impossible to acknowledge all the messages I’ve received and continue to receive from thousands of people.
Please accept this as my acknowledgement of your thoughtfulness and kind wishes. You’re all making me feel more special than I deserve to be. Thank you!
